I have wondered all my life... and pondered on it for endless times. And being a musician, I think I had spent more time on this than many can, in their busy lives.
You like a song, if there is something of you, in it. Complicated? Ok let me explain. If you listen to a thumping kick with grinding bass work, and fall in love with it... if, after listening to this "mass" song, it is going round and round in your head all day... if you felt like dancing to it and restrained yourself because your boss might actually not appreciate it, you could know that there is a "mass" element in your very essential make-up.
What does this mean?
Simple.
Observe the next time you listen to "Ringa Ringa" if you are a Telugu speaking person. Or "Gangam Style" if you are not. The thumping beat and the bass start effecting you in the area of your lower abdomen and the base of your spinal chord. This area is called Moolaadhaara and Swaadhishtaana chakras from our ancient times in Hindustaan.
And relax and observe your body when you are listening to one of those melodies of Ilayaraja or AR Rahman. You will see that they are acting upon, in a broad sense, your chest area. Where they say is your heart, yeah, the real one and the one poets sing about. This area is being called the Anahata Chakra since ancient times in Hindustaan.
There is a set difference in your breathing pattern when you listen to these two kinds of songs. The breathing is more rapid and rhythmic listening to the thumping numbers, while it is more soft, and in some moments, the breathing is almost absent for a while when you listen to the melodious tunes.
